In Creation: “Luminous Journey” at Hyatt Regency Ontario

Carlyn Ray and her team are creating Luminous Journey, a custom suspended glass sculpture for the reimagined Hyatt Regency Ontario in California, inspired by the beauty, transformation, and resilience of the monarch butterfly.

More than 400 handcrafted glass elements will come together in the hotel lobby, including butterflies created with members of the Inland Empire community. Each carries its own color, story, and hope into the larger work.

Created one piece at a time, Luminous Journey celebrates what becomes possible when individual acts of creativity and light come together, welcoming guests with a reminder that each of us has the power to leave the world a little brighter.

The Power of Connection

Carlyn Ray shared her creative process with two groups organized by the nonprofit National CORE and Hope through Housing in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Children, families, and community members each decorated a butterfly, filling it with colors and personal meaning. Eight-year-old Elizabeth created hers with a hope that people would care for the world. Some others decorated theirs in memory of a loved one. Each butterfly carries a story.

All butterflies are now being fired and finished in Carlyn’s Dallas studio, where they will become part of the larger sculpture. Like butterflies emerging from transformation, this sculpture reminds us that individual acts of love become extraordinary when hearts open, and the freedom of creativity is experienced.
